History of Wolfstone

Our Legacy

Wolfstone Kilt Company was founded in 1996 by Virginia Watson. Virginia built a reputation and a dedicated following for beautiful garments made from carefully sourced materials by a team of talented craftspeople.

In January 2024, long-time Wolfstone employee Kelsey Wetherington became the new owner when Virginia decided to move on from the clothing business and focus on her writing.

Kelsey and the team are carrying on the tradition of transformation that only period clothing can invoke, while also expanding access beyond our East Coast events and the Maryland studio.

Our Beliefs

Wolfstone believes in creating exquisite pieces that become staples in your wardrobe. We want your garments to be versatile and wearable for years to come.

It’s our job to help you feel the joy and confidence that come with slipping into a dress, kilt, chemise or jacket that fits, flatters and presents you exactly how you want to be seen in the world.

It’s nothing short of transformation.

Our Process

Nearly everything we sell is handmade in our local workrooms. Thanks to the talents of our incredible cutters, stitchers and finishers, we cut and sew clothing in-house, using only the highest-quality, sustainable materials and practices.

We also work in partnership with other companies we trust and admire, including Potomac Leather.  To protect the history and heritage of the tartan industry within Scotland, we source all of our tartan directly from the three largest woolen mills in Scotland.

For these reasons, online orders can take up to two weeks to fulfill and ship.

Exclusive Wolfstone Tartan

A clann mo chroi – the clan of my heart.

Clan tartans are a traditional Scottish symbol that represents the unique identity of each clan.

Wolfstone tartan was designed by our founder Virigina Watson during a trip to Forfar, Scotland in 2008. The shades of gray are for our namesake, the Pictish Wolf Stone in Inverness, Scotland. The blue is to honor the sacred Woad plant that the early Celts used to paint themselves for battle. The burgundy stripe is to remember the blood spilled for Scottish independence. The white is for unity.

Created specifically by us so you can join our clan and proudly wear your Wolfstone Tartan.

Purchase Wolfstone Tartan items and become a member of the Wolfstone Clan, earning 10% off any in-stock items. Discount also applies to our sister company Potomac Leather.
